The art of storytelling is as old as time itself for the Yup'ik people who live throughout the Bering Sea and Southwestern Alaska.  This form of fan is used by both boys and men of the community to powerfully express emotion, while telling a story through dance.

This dance fan is my own interpretation of the ancient carved handle style.  Designed asymmetrically to fit comfortably in ones hand, the shape aides the practitioner in visually identifying the right from the left position.

On the upper face of each handle is my makers mark, the legendary Palraiyuk; a type of mythical land/water dragon predating 1st contact with European peoples.
